For bodily exercise profiteth <5624> little: but godliness is profitable <5624> unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
1 Timothy 4:8
The Greek word for “profit” in the New Testament is ophelimos(#5624) and is found in 1 Timothy 4:8 twice. There is a contrast between the two parts of this verse where this Greek word is used: 1) bodily exercise has a temporal benefit, that is it has some benefit, but the benefit does not last; however, 2) godliness has an eternal benefit already beginning in this life. How can we know about the eternal things that benefit us unto godliness?
All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable <5624> for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Timothy 3:16
The Bible has the eternal things that benefit us unto salvation and godliness! We are to be exercised in the solid food of God’s Word.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:14
Someone can have a healthy appearance to the world, but God can take that person out in a moment. There are so many things that people do to keep their physical heart healthy, but what about your spiritual heart? God gives us the following warning:
Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Hebrews 3:12-13
